Mirror mirror on the … horse?

Life has a way of teaching us lessons if we’re willing to listen, and sometimes the best teachers don’t speak our language at all. They say horses are mirrors of the soul. Stand beside one and they will show you the truth of yourself – your calm, your restlessness, your doubts, your quiet strength, your mood, your energy.

I’ve seen it time and again with young people. A teenager walks up to a horse with bravado, he puffs out his chest, determined to show who’s boss. The horse, unimpressed, blows through his nose and takes a step back, as if offering a playful challenge to say “Nice try, but who are you really?”. Within minutes the bravado melts, replaced by laughter and eventually a calm presence the horse is happy to meet. Another approaches timidly, and the horse waits patiently, almost inviting them to find their ground. The horse doesn’t judge – it simply reflects. And in that reflection, the young person begins to see themselves more clearly.

That’s the beauty of equine-assisted therapy. Horses don’t care about labels or appearances. They respond only to what’s authentic. They invite honesty. They remind us that connection is not about control but about respect, patience, and trust. For young people, trying to find their way in a noisy, confusing world, this lesson can be both a challenge and a life changing gift. It invites them to slow down, regulate their emotions, and discover the power of honest connection.

In learning to guide a horse, they also learn to guide themselves – discovering how to be grounded, how to connect, and how to walk with patience, empathy, and confidence. And in that quiet partnership, many find healing without ever having to say a word.

Horses may be mirrors of the soul, but they’re also masters of mischief. And if you ever forget that, here’s Daisie to remind you – the wheelbarrow had it coming!

Don’t know what you’re talking about …wasn’t me … like it when i got here …honest…
